Hungary 1696-KB thaler Dav-3264
This specimen was lot 33952 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Hungary: Leopold I Taler 1696-KB MS64 NGC, Kremnitz mint. A highly lustrous representative featuring soft golden accents throughout gleaming, choice surfaces. A popular issue, and particularly compelling when located so fine. From the WTR Collection." This type, struck 1681-1700 in many varieties (Dav-3260, -3261, -3262, -3262A, -3262B, -3263, -3263A, -3264, -3265), is common. This variety, struck 1695-99, is listed as one of the more common thalers of the period. Hungary in 1695 had been freshly reconquered by the Austrians from the Turks but was not part of the Empire.
