Künker sale 400, lot 361

This specimen was lot 361 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €20,000 (about US$25,946 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Leopold I. 1657-1705. Doppelter Reichstaler 1695, NB-PO, Nagybánya. Doppelter Immaculata-Taler. LEOPLDVS · D : G : ROM : IMP : S : A : G : HVNGARI : REX · Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit Lorbeerkranz, umgelegtem Mantel und der Kette des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies//S : IMMACVLATA · VIR : MAR : - MAT : DEI · PAT : HVNGA · 1695 · Madonna mit Zepter in der Rechten und dem Kind auf dem linken Arm steht v. v. auf Mondsichel, umher Strahlenkranz, zu den Seiten das geteilte Münzstättenzeichen N - B (Nagybánya) und die geteilte Signatur P - O (Peter Österreicher, Münzmeister in Nagybánya 1684-1699), unten gekröntes, zweifeldiges Wappen. Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Patina, winz. Randfehler, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus 263, Frankfurt/Main 1962, Nr. 730. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I, 1657-1705, double thaler of 1695, Nagabanya mint. Obverse: armored, mantled and laureate bust right with order chain; reverse: Madonna with a scepter in her right hand and the Child on her left arm stands facing on the crescent moon, in a glory, on the sides the divided mint mark N - B (Nagybánya) and the divided signature P - O (Peter Österreicher, mint master in Nagybánya 1684-1699), below, crowned arms. Extremely rare, fine patina, minor edge defects, extremely fine.)"

This rare type is doubly unusual in displaying mintmaster's initials, a rare practice at this mint. Multiple thalers are very rare from Hungary.
