Jean Elsen sale 142, lot 1472

This specimen was lot 1472 in Jean Elsen sale 142 (Brussels, September 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, HOLLAND, Provincie, AR zilveren dukaat, 1673. Vz/ Staande ridder n. r. met zwaard en provinciewapen. Kz/ Gekroond Generaliteitswapen. Zwak geslagen. Fraai à Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Holland, silver ducat of 1673. Obverse: standing knight facing right, holding sword and supporting the provincial arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality. Weakly struck, Fine - Very Fine.)"

Silver ducats from the province of Holland are not listed as rare but this is only the third one we have been able to obtain. The type is listed for 1659-70 (Dav-4896), 1672-74, 1679-80, 1683-84, 1693-95 (Dav-4898) and 1735-1800 (Dav-1840). Double silver ducats also exist.

Recorded mintage: 311,496 for 1673-74.

Specification: 28.25 g, 0.873 fine silver; this specimen is 27,85 g.
