Hesse-Cassel 1748-ICB 1/8 thaler
This specimen was lot 11393 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €125 (about US$130). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Hesse-Kassel. 1/8 Taler, 1748 - ICB. Kassel Mint. Fredrik I. NGC AU-55. Stuck in his capacity as Landgraf of Hesse-Kassel. From the L. E. Bruun Collection. Ex: Münzkabinett der Stadtbibliothek zu Leipzig Collection (Leipzig-1853) Lot # 6737." This type was struck 1748 only and is rather scarce. Frederick was originally a Hessian prince when he married Ulrika Eleonora and became king in 1720. He succeeded as landgrave of Hesse-Cassel in 1730 and was titular ruler thereof until his death; his brother William VIII served as his regent there and became landgrave himself in 1751.
