Hesse-Cassel 1746 ducat Fr-1299
The first specimen was lot 679 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMAN STATES. HESSEN-CASSEL. Friedrich I, Langrave of Hesse-Cassel as King of Sweden, 1730-1751. Ducat, 1746. Bare head r. with Swedish title. Rv. Tall, narrow crowned quartered Arms of Sweden, Latin title Landgrave of Hessen. Friedrich was the spouse of Sweden's Queen Ulrica Eleanora, displacing her to rule her kingdom with great success in his own right. Much lustre enhances this coin's beauty. AU-55 (NGC)." The second specimen was lot 21120 in Ponterio sale 161 (Chicago, August 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Cassel. Ducat, 1746. Friedrich I (1730-51). NGC AU-55." The second specimen may be the same coin as the first. The SCWC lists this type for 1731, 1737 and 1746-50 but the picture shown therein is of an armored bust.
