Sincona Auction 103, lot 283

This specimen was lot 283 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 2,750 CHF (about US$4,191 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Hessen-Kassel, Landgrafschaft, Wilhelm VIII. 1751-1760. Taler 1754, Kassel. Ausbeute der Bieberer Gruben. Sehr selten. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung mit feiner Patina. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, William VIII, 1751-60, thaler of 1754, Cassel mint, for the Bieberer mine. Very rare. NGC MS61, Extraordinary condition with nice toning, Finest certified by NGC.)"

In 1754, the landgrave, brother and successor to Frederick, king of Sweden, issued three almost identical thalers: KM 453/Dav-2295 (date in Roman numerals), KM 454/Dav-2296 (1/9 MARCK in one line) and KM 455/Dav-2297 (1/9 MARCK in two lines). Another mining thaler, Dav-2298, was struck in 1759. All are rare.
