This specimen was lot 3762 in Sincona sale 70 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$263 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Helvetische Republik. 5 Batzen 1799 S, Solothurn. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Switzerland, Helvetic Confederation, five batzen of 1799, Solothurn mint. Rare, Very fine-extremely fine.)"

The Helvetian Republic was a puppet state set up by the French in 1798 on the remnants of the old Swiss Confederation. It collapsed in 1803 under religious and class conflict and Napoleon reorganized it as the Swiss confederation, restoring the liberties of the old cantons. Most of its issues are rare and expensive. Both Basel and Solothurn minted this type.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 4.59 g.
