Sincona sale 83, lot 5178

This specimen was lot 5178 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 2,500 CHF (about US$3,346 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND Helvetische Republik. 10 Batzen 1798 B, Bern. Äusserst selten. Fast sehr schön. (Helvetic Republic, ten batzen of 1798, Bern mint. Extremely rare, About very fine." The Helvetian Republic was a puppet state set up by the French in 1798 on the remnants of the old Swiss Confederation. It collapsed in 1803 under religious and class conflict and Napoleon reorganized it as the Swiss confederation, restoring the liberties of the old cantons. Most of its issues are rare and expensive. This type was struck 1798-1801. Ten batzen equalled one franc, so this coin is probably billon.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 11.34 g.
