The first specimen was lot 1819 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$684 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Helvetische Republik 40 Batzen 1798 S. Kl. Kr. Fast vorzüglich." (Switzerland, Helvetian Republic, 40 batzen of 1798. Nice extremely fine.)

The second specimen was lot 931 in Jean Elsen price list 258 (Brussels, October 2011) where it was offered for €700 (about US$977). The catalog description noted,

"SUISSE, République helvétique, AR Neutaler de 40 Batzen, 1798 S, Solothurn. Droit: Soldat debout de face, tenant une bannière sur l'épaule. Revers: Valeur dans une couronne. Rare. Superbe. (Helvetic republic, new thaler of forty batzen, 1798 S, Solothurn mint. Obverse: standing soldier bears a banner on shoulder; reverse: denomination within wreath. Rare, extremely fine.)"

The Helvetian Republic was a puppet state set up by the French in 1798 on the remnants of the old Swiss Confederation. It collapsed in 1803 under religious and class conflict and Napoleon reorganized it as the Swiss confederation, restoring the liberties of the old cantons. Most of its issues are rare and expensive. Both Basel and Solothurn minted this type.

Recorded mintage: unknown but few.
