Künker sale 386, lot 5700

This specimen was lot 5700 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,163 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ, BERN, Stadt. Taler zu 40 Batzen 1798. Prachtexemplar. Fast Stempelglanz. (Switzerland, city of Bern, thaler of forty batzen of 1798. Outstanding example, about uncirculated.)"

The climbing bear is the badge of Bern, Switzerland. Two types of thaler were struck in 1798; the thin warrior (KM 165) and a stout warrior shown here, which is slightly scarcer. In Bern, 4 kreuzer = one batzen and 40 batzen = one thaler.
