Helvetian Republic 1799-B 5 batzen
This specimen was lot 1821 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$183 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Helvetische Republik 5 Batzen 1799 B. Kl. Kr. Gutes vorzüglich. (Switzerland, Helvetic republic, five batzen of 1799. Light hairlines, good extremely fine.)"
The Helvetian Republic was a puppet state set up by the French in 1798 on the remnants of the old Swiss Confederation. It collapsed in 1803 under religious and class conflict and Napoleon reorganized it as the Swiss confederation, restoring the liberties of the old cantons. Most of its issues are rare and expensive. Five batzen equalled half a franc, so this coin is probably billon.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: silver, this specimen 4,65 g.
