Sincona sale 87, lot 4229

This specimen was lot 4229 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 3,600 CHF (about US$4,848 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Helvetische Republik, 10 Batzen 1799 S, Solothurn. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. Vom 10 Batzen 1799 mit Münzzeichen S sind bis heute nur wenige Stücke bekannt. (Switzerland, Helvetic Republic, ten batzen of 1799, Solothurn mint. Very rare, Extremely fine. The ten batzen of 1799 with mintmark "S" are known from only a few examples.)"

This type was struck 1798-1801 and the 1799-S a better date. Both Basel and Solothurn minted this type. The Helvetian Republic was a puppet state set up by the French in 1798 on the remnants of the old Swiss Confederation. It collapsed in 1803 under religious and class conflict and Napoleon reorganized it as the Swiss confederation, restoring the liberties of the old cantons. Most of its issues are rare and expensive. Ten batzen equalled one franc, so this coin is probably billon.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 7.57 g.
