Stephen Album sale 50, lot 3091

This specimen was lot 3091 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "HANOVER: George IV, 1820-1830, AR 16 gute groschen, 1821, once lightly cleaned, UNC." The kingdom of Hannover was the old duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg prior to the Napoleonic invasions. It was separated from the British crown in 1837 and absorbed by Prussia in 1866. It is not recorded whether George IV ever set foot in his German domain. This type was struck 1821 only. It has the reverse legend "CONV·MÜNZE·FEIN SILB·" in an arc; the similar KM 127 has that legend in two straight lines. The SCWC prices them the same. This denomination, worth half a thaler, was terminated when the thaler was reduced from 23.54 g to 16.82 g.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.

Specification: 11.77 g, 0.993 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-128.
