Hannover 1800-C 24 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 5734 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €280 (about US$390 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg III. 1760-1820. 2/3 Taler (24 Mariengroschen) 1800, Clausthal. Kehrprägung. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Westfälische Auktionsgesllschaft 34, Dortmund 2006, Nr. 1290. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George III, 1760-1820, two-thirds thaler of 1800, Clausthal mint. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This type was struck for George III 1761-1801 and is common. There was a concurrent issue of this denomination featuring the wild man of the forest (KM 347) but it was terminated in 1784. In 1800, the state was still technically the electorate of Brunswick-Luneburg but everybody called it Hannover, a situation formalized when it was reconstituted the kingdom of Hannover in 1815.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 13,01 g.
Catalog reference: KM 341, Welter 2817; Kahnt 191 b (this example); Smith 231.
