Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74572

This specimen was lot 74572 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1767-IWS. Clausthal Mint. Georg III (George III of Great Britain). NGC MS-64+. The lustrous surfaces of this high grade coin are softened by a pleasing champagne toning throughout. Very attractive. Ex: Wolff-Metternich Collection." This type was struck 1761-1801 for George III and reverts to the 24 mariengroschen denomination after two-thirds thalers were struck for George II. We also note KM 347 (wild man reverse) for 1767.
