Künker sale 294, lot 3591

This specimen was lot 3591 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,696 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, Georg III. 1760-1820. Dukat 1767, Zellerfeld. Ausbeute der Harzer Gruben. Harzgold. GOLD. Winz. Randfehler, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Preussag Collection, Part I. Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 1, London 2015, Nr. 314. (Germany, electorate of Hannover, George III, 1760-1820, ducat of 1767, Zellerfeld mint, for the Harz mines. Small edge defect, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1767, 1774, 1776, 1780, 1783, 1785, 1789 but is rare. Friedberg lumps all the Harz gold ducats of George III under one catalog number but the SCWC breaks them into several types. The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866.
