SB923-74540r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74540 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1711. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg Ludwig (future George I of Great Britain). PCGS AU-55. Bold striking detail fully articulates the Wild Man's face, greatly enhancing eye appeal as compared to other survivors. Generous quantities of satin mint luster shine through, only minorly dulled across the obverse fields by slight wear. Original toning also enhances the attractiveness of this offering with pale magenta gray surfaces occasionally discharging a burst of pumpkin orange iridescence. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: WAG auction with ticket." This scarce type was struck 1698-1711. In 1714, Georg Ludwig ascended the throne of Great Britain and all the Hanoverian coinage was revised to show his new title the next year.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-423; KM-15; Welter-2158.
