Hamburg 1908-J 3 mark
This specimen was lot 6226 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,098 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"REICHSSILBERMÜNZEN, HAMBURG. Freie und Hansestadt. 3 Mark 1908. Prachtexemplar. Herrliche Patina, polierte Platte. (free city of Hamburg, three mark of 1908. Outstanding example, superb patina, proof.)"
This type was struck 1908-14 and all dates are common. The three mark was not part of the original imperial coinage, the leftover vereinsthalers from before unification filling that role. By 1908, these were becoming worn out, so this denomination was introduced. Silver coinage in Germany did not survive wartime inflation.
Recorded mintage: 408,475.
Specification: 16.67 g, 0.900 fine silver, 33 mm diameter, lettered edge.
