SB924-74608r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74608 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 3 Mark, 1908-E. Muldenhutten Mint. Fredrich August II. PCGS MS-63. A handsome Choice specimen that is graced by a myriad of colors from deep purple to sunset orange. Accompanied by an old collector's envelope, with the toning presumably the result of decades of storage within it. From the Richard Margolis Collection." Saxony was one of the half dozen states in the Wilhelmine empire to issue coinage on a regular basis. This three mark was minted 1908-13 and is common. It accompanied a similar two mark and five mark. A commemorative three mark of 1917 (KM 1276) is the last issue from this state, closing out a thousand years of coinage.

Recorded mintage: 276,073, a slightly better date.

Specification: 16.67 g, 0.900 fine silver, 33 mm diameter, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: KM-1267; J-135, Dav-492.
