Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 646

This specimen was lot 646 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $4,993.75. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hamburg. 5 Mark, 1907-J. NGC-PROOF-67 ULTRA CAMEO. Highest certified specimen. Blast white with deep mirror surfaces and a needle sharp strike. A superb example that will grace any collection. From the Rockaway Collection." This type was struck in Hamburg 1891-1913. Hamburg, on the North Sea, was one of three imperial free cities permitted a continued existence under the Empire of 1871; Bremen and Lübeck were the others. She struck silver two, three and five mark and gold ten and twenty mark until that Empire's collapse in 1918. This type is readily available in worn condition but expensive in high grade. The Hamburg mint is still in operation, striking coins for the Federal Republic of Germany.
