Hamburg 1873-B 10 mark
This specimen was lot 30023 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $22,325. The catalog description[1] noted, "An Impressively Preserved, Starkly Cameoed Gem, Rarely Available in Proof Condition. Hamburg. Free City gold Proof 10 Mark 1873-B PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC, Hannover mint, One-year type. An extreme rarity in proof format, with the census of confirmed survivors sitting at a paltry two coins, and the present coin being the finer of those two. The only piece certified, this example justifiably received the lofty premium Gem grade, as no post-strike imperfections are apparent even after close inspection; strong cameo contrast is also observed on both sides. Several identifying blushes of rose-apricot color do remain readily evident as a result of high copper content in the alloy mixture, and in future offerings, should serve to easily establish the coin's pedigree. Like so many other coins in this Kaiser Collection, another landmark opportunity for the collector by German State, denomination or striking format. From The Kaiser Collection of German Gold Coins." This type was struck 1873 only and is rare. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces.
Recorded mintage: 25,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 3.98 g, 0.900 fine gold.
