This specimen was part of lot 34436 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Elizabeth II 3-Piece NGC-Certified gold Proof "London 2012 Olympics" Set 2012, includes: 1) "Minerva" 25 Pounds - PR70 Ultra Cameo, KM 1221; 2) "Vulcan" 25 Pounds - PR70 Ultra Cameo, KM 1222; 3) "Mars" 100 Pounds - PR70 Ultra Cameo, KM 1223. British Royal mint. A glistening set that perfectly contrasts dark, blemish-free surfaces with lightly aurous frosty devices. Comes with original case and COA #314. AGW 1.465 oz." The Olympics of 2012 was honored by a set of nine gold NCLT's featuring various Roman deities, including Mars (shown here). As the Olympics have their origin in an ancient Greek festival, we don't know why the Roman names were used.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.69 g, 0.917 fine gold, 0.960 troy oz AGW, 32.7 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 1223.
