Sincona sale 85, lot 1733

This specimen was lot 1733 in Sincona sale 86 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,963 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Elizabeth II. 1952-2022. Proof 5 Pounds 1988, Royal Mint Llantrisant. Third bust. Selten. Nur 3'315 Exemplare geprägt. Rare. Only 3,315 pieces struck. NGC MS68 DPL."

This type was issued 1987-91 in small numbers and sold as bullion coins. The denomination has not circulated since the time of Edward VII (and probably not much even then). Other gold five pound types have been issued after this one, all for sale to collectors. The discrepancy in the mintage figures given below is probably the difference between the number minted and the number sold.

Recorded mintage: est. 10,000 per the SCWC, 3,315 per the auctioneers.

Specification: 39.94 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 39.93 g.

Catalog reference: KM 949, Hill F53, Spink SE5, Fr-427.
