Sincona sale 75, lot 144

This specimen was lot 144 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 24,000 CHF (about US$29,131 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Grossbritannien | Königreich. Charles II. 1660-1685. 5 Guineas 1681, London. T. TERTIO. Second laureate bust, with elephant and castle below. Selten. NGC UNC Details. Kleine Kratzer im Revers. (Rare, Small scratches on reverse.)"

This type was struck 1680-84. There is a similar type (KM 444.1) struck during the same years (including 1681) without the elephant and castle added below the king's bust; this marked gold obtained from Africa.
