Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 32055

This specimen was lot 32055 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Attractive Later-Date Charles II 5 Guineas, GREAT BRITAIN. 5 Guineas, 1681 Year TRICESIMO TERTIO. London Mint. Charles II. NGC EF-45. Second bust. An exceptional survivor, this larger-format gold issue retains a solid degree of shimmering brilliance as well as detail, with an olive-yellow hue on each side. An overall impressive example of the type. From the Augustana Collection." This type was struck 1680-84. There is a similar type (Fr-283) struck during the same years (including 1681) with the elephant and castle added below the king's bust; this marked gold obtained from Africa.
