Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 1727

This specimen was lot 1727 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,828 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GRANDE-BRETAGNE, Charles II (1660-1685), AV demi-guinée, 1681. D/ B. nu et lauré à d. R/ Croix formée des écus couronnés d'Angleterre, Ecosse, France et Irlande, séparés par les insignes royaux. Rare Griffes et petits coups. Très Beau. (kingdom of Great Britain, Charles II, 1660-85, gold half guinea of 1681. Obverse: laureate bare head right; reverse: cross formed of the arms of England, Scotland, France and Ireland, separated by four scepters. Rare, scratches and minor nicks, very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1672-84. There is a similar type (KM 439.2) struck 1676-84 with an elephant and castle added below the king's bust; this marked gold obtained from Africa.
