Sincona sale 77, lot 2370

The first specimen was lot 136 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 46,000 CHF (about US$55,835 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Grossbritannien | Königreich. Charles II. 1660-1685. 5 Guineas 1675, London. V. SEPTIMO. First laureate bust. Selten. NGC UNC Details. Minimal gereinigt. (Rare, Very minor cleaning.)" The second specimen was lot 2370 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 23,000 CHF (about US$27,917 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich. Charles II. 1660-1685. 5 Guineas 1675, London. V. SEPTIMO. Selten. NGC AU50. (kingdom of Great Britain, Charles II, 1660-85, five guineas of 1675. First laureate bust. Rare.)"

This type was struck 1668-78 and represented an enormous amount of money at the time and still does today. Five guineas with an elephant and castle below the bust also exist for 1675; these were made from gold brought from Africa.

Specification: 41.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, the first specimen 41.60 g., the second specimen 41.56 g.
