Steve Album sale 51, lot 1042

This specimen was lot 1042 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY: Third Reich, AR 5 reichsmark, 1937-A, Paul von Hindenburg 1847-1934, a superb proof quality example! PCGS graded Proof 65 CAM, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." This type of 1936-39 replaced an earlier type of 1935-36, which lacked a swastika on the reverse. Though the size of a half dollar, its higher fineness meant that it contained the same amount of silver as the larger five mark of the Weimar Republic such as the Goethe commemorative (Dav-974). This type was also minted at Vienna ("B"), Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Berlin ("A") and Hamburg ("J"). Paul von Hindenburg, president of Germany 1925-34, despised the Nazis but died soon after they took over.
