German East Africa 1909-J 5 heller
This type was struck 1908-09 for German East Africa. This is a product of the Hamburg mint. This specimen was lot 32990 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "German Colony. Wilhelm II Proof 5 Heller 1909-J PR66 Brown NGC, Hamburg mint. Soft brown surfaces ignite with flares of purple color across the devices and around the peripheries of this fine specimen. Choice in all regards, and visually alluring as such." After a prolonged struggle, the British managed to conquer the region during World War One and it was partitioned between them and the Belgians by the Treaty of Versailles. The Belgian portion is now Burundi and Rwanda and the British part merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania.
