German East Africa 1913-J 5 heller
This specimen was lot 32817 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "German Colony. Wilhelm II Proof 5 Heller 1913-J PR65 Cameo NGC, Hamburg mint. A gem Proof with icicle-like mirrored surfaces and an incredibly strong strike for the issue." This type was struck 1913-14 for German East Africa at Berlin and Hamburg. After a prolonged struggle, the British managed to conquer the region during World War One and it was partitioned between them and the Belgians by the Treaty of Versailles. The Belgian portion is now Burundi and Rwanda and the British part merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania.
