German East Africa 1911-A 10 heller

This specimen was lot 22408 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMAN EAST AFRICA. 10 Heller, 1911-A. NGC PROOF-63. Lightly toned with few instances of contact for the grade." This type was struck 1908-11 and 1914 at Berlin and Hamburg. After a prolonged struggle, the British managed to conquer the region during World War One and it was partitioned between them and the Belgians by the Treaty of Versailles. The Belgian portion is now Burundi and Rwanda and the British part merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania.
Recorded mintage: 500,000 plus proofs, a slightly better date.
