Steve Album sale 14, lot 1508

German East Africa was consolidated and officially proclaimed a German colony in 1897. After a prolonged struggle, the British managed to conquer the region during World War One and it was partitioned between them and the Belgians by the Treaty of Versailles. The Belgian portion is now Burundi and Rwanda and the British part merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania. This type was struck 1904-14 at Berlin and Hamburg (shown here). The specimen shown was lot 1508 in Stephen Album sale 14 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 21, 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMAN EAST AFRICA: Wilhem II, 1888-1918, AR ¼ rupie, 1910-J, nicely toned Extremely Fine."

Recorded mintage: 600,000.
