German East Africa 1908-J 5 heller

German East Africa was consolidated and officially proclaimed a German colony in 1897. After a prolonged struggle, the British managed to conquer the region during World War One and it was partitioned between them and the Belgians by the Treaty of Versailles. The Belgian portion is now Burundi and Rwanda and the British part merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania. The specimen shown was lot 1485 in Stephen Album sale 12 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 13, 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description noted, "GERMAN EAST AFRICA: AE 5 heller, 1908-J, slight oxidation, Extremely Fine."
