German East Africa 1908-J 10 heller
German East Africa was consolidated and officially proclaimed a German colony in 1897. After a prolonged struggle, the British managed to conquer the region during World War One and it was partitioned between them and the Belgians by the Treaty of Versailles. The Belgian portion is now Burundi and Rwanda and the British part merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania. This specimen was lot 3407 in Sincona sale 51 (Zurich, October 2018), where it sold for 140 CHF (about US$169 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Deutsch-Ostafrika, 10 Heller 1908 J, Hamburg. FDC. (German East Africa, ten heller of 1908, Hamburg mint. Uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1908-14 at Hamburg and Berlin. This is a common date.
