German East Africa was consolidated and officially proclaimed a German colony in 1897. After a prolonged struggle, the British managed to conquer the region during World War One and it was partitioned between them and the Belgians by the Treaty of Versailles. The Belgian portion is now Burundi and Rwanda and the British part merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania. This specimen was lot 22648 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMAN EAST AFRICA. 1/4 Rupie, 1904-A. PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. Sharply struck and brilliant."

Recorded mintage: 300,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 2.916 g, 0.917 silver, 19.2 mm diameter, reeded edge, 0.086 oz ASW.
