Geneva 1637-PM 4 pistolets Fr-247
This specimen was lot 21421 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $15,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Incredibly Rare Genevan Gold Denomination. SWITZERLAND. Geneva. Quadrupla or 4 Pistolets, 1637-PM. NGC VF Details--Ex Jewelry. Obverse: GENEVA CIVITAS, double eagle facing, with coat-of-arms on breast; crown above; Reverse: POST TENEBRAS LVX, IHS with combining omega above; all set on the center of a sunburst. An INCREDIBLY RARE example, this is the sole representative of the rather large denomination for the year, based upon this cataloger's research. Despite its evidence as a jewelry piece in the past--possibly aiding in its actual survival to this day--it nevertheless offers a momentous opportunity for a very brief and exceedingly difficult denomination from the mid-17th century. Ex: Stack's (1/2008) Lot # 3382." This type was struck 1635-47 and all dates are rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.10 g, 0.900 fine gold.
Catalog reference: Fr-247; KM-39.
