Sincona sale 83, lot 4787

This specimen was lot 4787 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 18,000 CHF (about US$24,090 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND Geneva, Quadruple 1638 BG, Genf. GENEVA· CIVITAS· I638. Der doppelköpfige, gekrönte Reichsadler mit dem Wappenschild auf der Brust. Rv. POST· TENEBRAS· LVX · B· G. Sonne mit Strahlen, im Zentrum Christusmonogramm. Äusserst selten. Gutes sehr schön (canton of Geneva, gold quadruple of 1638, Geneva mint. Obverse: crowned doubled headed imperial eagle with arms on its breast; reverse: shining sun with Christ's monogram in the center. Extremely rare, Good very fine)." This type was struck 1635-38 and 1641-42. It was equal to four écus pistolet.
