Geneva 1554-G quart
This specimen was lot 3228 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$238 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Genf/Genève, Stadt und Kanton, Quart 1554, Genf. Seltene Variante mit Mzz. G. Sehr selten. Schön-sehr schön. Demole erwähnt zwar, dass H. Goulaz auch 1554 als Münzmeister arbeitete, konnte jedoch keine Quarts mit dieser Jahreszahl und Mzz. G finden. (Switzerland, canton of Geneva, quart of 1554, Geneva mint, rare variety with mintmark "G". Very rare, Fine-very fine. Demole mentions that H. Goulaz also worked as mint master in 1554, but could not find any quarts with this year and mint mark G.)"
This type was struck intermittently 1535, 1551-54, 1557, 1560-62, 1589-98. The 1554 comes with initials B or G. One thaler was 96 sols and one sol was four quarts.
