Gelderland 1783 duit
This specimen was lot 75396 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Gelderland. Duit, 1783. NGC MS-65 Brown. A co[p]per issue with deep mahogany brown color. Few of this elusive type are ever seen in Gem grade." Duits were struck in copper in Gelderland throughout the eighteenth century until the destruction of the United Provinces in 1794. This particular type was struck in copper, silver and gold 1783-88. The copper ones circulated while the silver and gold specimens were souvenirs or presentation pieces. The mint in Harderwijk closed in 1802. One gulden was 96 duits.
