Fribourg 1714 2 kreuzer
The first specimen was lot 3151 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 130 CHF (about US$189 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Freiburg/Fribourg, Stadt und Kanton, Halbbatzen 1714, Freiburg. Variante mit Wertbezeichnung. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Studie zu Halbbatzen, Schillingen, Kreuzer, Vierer und 2/3 Haller von Freiburg i. Üe./Fribourg. (Switzerland, canton of Fribourg, half batzen of 1714, variety with denomination. Fribourg mint. Rare in this condition, About Extremely Fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 4185 in the same sale, where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Freiburg/Fribourg, Stadt und Kanton, Halbbatzen 1714, Freiburg. Altes Wappen mit Burg zwischen F - B. Rv. Variante mit Wertbezeichnung im Feld. Gutes sehr schön. Man beachte die 2 der Wertbezeichnung, welche zuerst kopfstehend in den Stempel gepunzt und anschliessend verbessert wurde. (Switzerland, canton of Fribourg, half batzen of 1714, variety with denomination. Old arms with castle between "F - B". Variety with denomination in the field. Good Very Fine. Note the 2 of the denomination, which was first punched upside down into the die and then corrected.)"
Das Kapitel Freiburg im Üechtland / Fribourg beinhaltet eine grössere Partie von Scheidemünzen des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts, bei denen eine grosse Anzahl Stempelvarianten in vielen Losen zusammengefasst wurden. Der betreffende Sammler hat sich die Mühe gemacht, die Halbbatzen, Schillinge, Kreuzer, Vierer und 2/3 Haller (früher als einseitige Deniers bezeichnet) nach Varianten zu sammeln, und er hat dies auch dokumentiert. So ist eine Arbeit entstanden, welche bis heute noch niemand zusammengestellt hat. (The Fribourg section of this auction contains a large collection of minor coins from the 17th to 19th centuries, with a large number of die variants grouped into many lots. The collector in question took the trouble to collect the half-batzen, shillings, kreuzers, vierer, and 2/3 hallers (formerly known as uniface deniers) by variety, and he also documented this process. The result is a collection that no one has ever compiled before.)
This schilling was struck 1713-14. It is fairly common. One thaler was forty schilling.
