Fribourg 1713 schilling
This specimen was lot 3149 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$508 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Freiburg/Fribourg, Stadt und Kanton, Schilling 1713, Freiburg. Gekrönter Doppeladler mit kleinem Freiburger Wappen mit der Burg auf der Brust. MON : NOV FRIBVRG. Rv. Brustbild des hl. Nikolaus von Myra mit Mitra und Nimbus von vorne, in der Rechten der Krummstab, in der Linken das Buch und die drei goldenen Kugeln. + SANCTVS [Blümchen] NICOLAVS + . Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. Kleines Zainende. Exemplar der Studie zu Halbbatzen, Schillingen, Kreuzer, Vierer und 2/3 Haller von Freiburg i. Üe./Fribourg. (Switzerland, canton of Fribourg, schilling of 1713, Fribourg mint. Obverse: crowned double headed eagle with small Fribourg arms with castle in its breast; reverse: bust of St. Nicholas of Myra with miter and halo, holding the Gospels and crozier. Das Kapitel Freiburg im Üechtland / Fribourg beinhaltet eine grössere Partie von Scheidemünzen des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts, bei denen eine grosse Anzahl Stempelvarianten in vielen Losen zusammengefasst wurden. Der betreffende Sammler hat sich die Mühe gemacht, die Halbbatzen, Schillinge, Kreuzer, Vierer und 2/3 Haller (früher als einseitige Deniers bezeichnet) nach Varianten zu sammeln, und er hat dies auch dokumentiert. So ist eine Arbeit entstanden, welche bis heute noch niemand zusammengestellt hat. (The Fribourg section of this auction contains a large collection of minor coins from the 17th to 19th centuries, with a large number of die variants grouped into many lots. The collector in question took the trouble to collect the half-batzen, shillings, kreuzers, vierer, and 2/3 hallers (formerly known as uniface deniers) by variety, and he also documented this process. The result is a collection that no one has ever compiled before.)
This schilling was struck 1713-14. It is fairly common. One thaler was forty schilling.
