Sincona sale 98, lot 4183

The first specimen was lot 5164 in Sincona sale 35 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 1,100 CHF (about US$1,306 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Freiburg/Fribourg | Stadt, 20 Kreuzer 1710. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (city of Fribourg, twenty kreuzer of 1710, Very fine-extremely fine, Better than average.)"

The second specimen was lot 4183 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,451 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Freiburg/Fribourg, Stadt und Kanton, 20 Kreuzer 1710, Freiburg. Probe. Altes Freiburger Wappen mit der Burg und einem Doppeladler darüber in einer Kartusche. R. Acht F ins Kreuz gestellt, in der Mitte ein kleines, neues Freiburger Wappen. Unten im Schriftkreis die Wertangabe in einem Oval. Selten. Sehr schön. Justiert. Exemplar der Auktion Chaponnière & Hess Divo 2, Zürich, Mai 2011, Los 948. (Switzerland, canton of Fribourg, twenty kreuzer of 1710, Fribourg mint, pattern. Obverse: old cantonal arms with tower and double headed eagle in a cartouche; reverse: eight "F's" arranged in a cross, small Fribourg arms in the center. At the bottom of the legend the value is indicated in an oval. Rare, Very Fine, Adjustment marks.)"

This was the only issue of this denomination in the eighteenth century and is rather scarce. Twenty kreuzer = five batzen = 1/8 thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 4.84 g. The second specimen is 4.39 g.

Catalog reference: D.T. 650, HMZ 2-273c, KM 33. The second specimen is MCV 54. D.T. 649b. Richter (Proben) 1-265, HMZ 2-273b.
