Fribourg 1621 batzen
The first specimen was lot 3137 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$ including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Freiburg/Fribourg, Stadt und Kanton, Batzen 1621, Freiburg. Gutes sehr schön. Zainende. (Switzerland, canton of Fribourg, batzen of 1621, Fribourg mint. Good Very Fine, Edge clip.)"
Das Kapitel Freiburg im Üechtland / Fribourg beinhaltet eine grössere Partie von Scheidemünzen des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts, bei denen eine grosse Anzahl Stempelvarianten in vielen Losen zusammengefasst wurden. Der betreffende Sammler hat sich die Mühe gemacht, die Halbbatzen, Schillinge, Kreuzer, Vierer und 2/3 Haller (früher als einseitige Deniers bezeichnet) nach Varianten zu sammeln, und er hat dies auch dokumentiert. So ist eine Arbeit entstanden, welche bis heute noch niemand zusammengestellt hat. (The Fribourg section of this auction contains a large collection of minor coins from the 17th to 19th centuries, with a large number of die variants grouped into many lots. The collector in question took the trouble to collect the half-batzen, shillings, kreuzers, vierer, and 2/3 hallers (formerly known as uniface deniers) by variety, and he also documented this process. The result is a collection that no one has ever compiled before.)
The second specimen was lot 4177 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Freiburg/Fribourg, Stadt und Kanton, Batzen 1621, Freiburg. Wappen mit dem grossen Turm links. Rv. Einfaches Ankerkreuz ohne Verzierungen. Selten. Schön. (Switzerland, canton of Fribourg, batzen of 1621, Fribourg mint, arms with large tower to left; reverse: Simple anchor cross without decorations. Rare, Fine.)"
The SCWC lists this type for 1621-22 plus a rare undated version. Another batzen of 1622-23, 1630-31, 1641 and 1648 (KM 17) features St. Nicholas on the reverse. It is much more available. One batzen was four kreuzer.
