Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 1825

This specimen was lot 1825 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €8,250 (about US$10,728 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Cinquième République (1959-), AV 500 euro, 2014. Coopération spatiale européenne. Extrêmement rare. Ecrin et certificat n° 14. Titre 0,999. Flan poli. (France, Fifth Republic, since 1959, gold 500 euro of 2014, European cooperation in space. Extremely rare, with box and certificate, Proof.)"

All the NCLT's of this denomination issued in 2014 were five ounce gold. Topics included the Eiffel tower (KM 2145), the FIFA World Cup (KM 2171) and this one honoring the Ariane spacecraft.

Specification: 155.5 g, 0.999 fine gold, 5.000 troy oz AGW, 50 mm diameter, this specimen 156,08 g.
