SB1024-74762r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74762 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 100 Francs, 2000. NGC PROOF-69. Series: 2000 Years of French Coinage, featuring a denar of Charlemagne. Boldly struck, bright and flashy, this charming rendition offers reflective fields with frosted reverse devices and is free of tone, haze or fog." Starting in the 1980's, the Paris mint issued so many NCLT's that the standard catalogs had to drop them to keep the books a manageable size. This one was struck to honor the denier of Charlemagne, a silver coin of the late Dark Ages.

Recorded mintage: 1,000.

Specification: 17 g, 0.920 fine gold, 31 mm diameter, 0.502 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-746; KM 1233.
