France H3040-29689r.jpg

This specimen was lot 29689 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[2] noted, "Republic 20 Centimes 1849-A MS65 NGC, Paris mint. A superb example of this first year of issue under the Second Republic, featuring the attractive Liberty head design with wholly-lustrous, titanium-silver surfaces that are nearly pristine. Rare so fine, and with a mintage of just 4,877 pieces, a coin seldom encountered in the marketplace, especially in this gem level of quality." This tiny coin was issued for France 1849-51 only but must have been extensively saved as high grade specimens of the 1850-A and 1851-A are common.

Recorded mintage: 4,871[1].

Specification: 1 g, 0.900 fine silver, 15 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: VG 303; KM 758.1, F.146/1.
