Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23466

This specimen was lot 23466 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 5 Francs, 1849-BB. Strasbourg Mint. NGC AU-58. A sharply detailed Second Republic crown with abundant field luster and mottled tan toning throughout. The date appears weak due to a minor planchet flaw." This issue of the Strasbourg mint is priced about twice the Paris mint issue of the Cérès head. The 1849-BB Hercules type (F.326/6) is very common. This coin was legal tender in the United States until 1857 at a value of 93 cents.

Recorded mintage: 915,883 plus 2,542,815 of the Hercules type[2].

Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Eugène-André Oudiné (1810-87).
