The first specimen was lot 1435 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for € 160 (about US$250 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Deuxième République (1848-1852), AR 2 francs, 1849 A, Paris. Rare. Très Beau. (France, second republic, 1848-52, silver two francs of 1849, Paris mint, rare, very fine.)"

This issue was struck 1849-51 and is rather scarce in anything above heavily worn condition. The type was revived for the two francs of the Third republic (1870-95).

Recorded mintage: 721,519.

Specification: 27 mm diameter, 10 grams, 0.900 fine silver, .289 troy oz ASW. Designed by Eugéne André Oudiné, 1810-1887.
