This specimen was lot 1434 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for € 370 (about US$578 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Deuxième République (1848-1852), AV 20 francs, 1849 A, Paris. Type Génie. Superbe. (France, second republic, 1848-52, gold twenty francs of 1849, Paris mint, "Genie" type. Extremely fine.)"

This issue was struck 1848-49 and is common in circulated condition. It is a revival of a design by Augustin Dupré used on some rare 24 livres d'or of 1793. All were struck in Paris.

Recorded mintage: 1,298,964 ("Genie" type) plus 61,092 ("Cérès head" type).

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter.
