France 1848-A 25 centimes
This specimen was lot 388 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $242. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE, Royal (Restored). Louis Philippe. 1830-1848. AR 25 Centimes. Paris mint; différents: hand and dog’s head. Jacques-Jean Barre, engraver general. Ch.-Louis Dierickx, director. Dated 1848 A. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65. Gem lustrous toned uncirculated. A few tiny spots on reverse. Last year of Louis Philippe. Purchased from A. H. Baldwin & Sons, September 1966." In 1845, the French quarter franc struck since 1803 was converted into a twenty-five centime coin. It seems doubtful that many people noticed as the new coin was the same size and weight as the old. This Paris mint product is not rare. The type and the denomination was terminated in 1848, to be superseded by a silver twenty centime piece.
Recorded mintage: 141,651 (priced about double the commonest date)[1].
Specification: 1.25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 15 mm diameter, plain edge. Designed by Joseph François Domard, 1792-1858; this specimen Ø15 mm, 1.26 g, 6h axis.
